Compliance Testing

The purpose of Compliance Testing is to identify ambiguities and inconsistencies in a specification. It is an extension of the standards development process and a specification should not be considered complete until a compliance test suite is written. Therefore, this testing is the start point and the end point of verifying a product. Being well controlled, Compliance Testing provides a correct basis for device certification. 

Interoperability Testing

Interoperability Testing is ultimately the "Bottom line” testing for an instantiated set of devices. Where Compliance testing identifies ambiguities and inconsistencies in the specification, Interoperability Testing may uncover areas not addressed by the specification. Therefore, it is not a good starting point; nor is it the end point of testing. Interoperability Testing may begin inexpensively. But, if it is not well integrated with a Compliance Testing Program, it can become uncontrollably expensive. Additionally, Interoperability Testing is difficult to scale and control if not built into the testing process early on.
